"Vivid Nightscape of Deep Ellum" is a fresh creation capturing the restless spirit of a city caught in a quiet moment. This 9" x 12" gouache painting undertakes a vibrant depiction of Deep Ellum, a lively district in Dallas, Texas, set during a rainy nightscape. The use of bright neon colors against the dark sky emboldens the tall buildings, creating sharp contrasts that bring this urban setting to life. Reflections dance across the glossy, rain-soaked streets, enhancing the dynamic energy with splashes of blues, reds, greens, and yellows.

Inspired by a photograph taken during the COVID-19 shutdown, when streets were still and stories abounded, this artwork bridges my past and present. Deep Ellum holds a place in my heart, a neighborhood where the echoes of history mix with personal vignettes from the late '80s—favorite lunch spots and nights out with friends linger in memory. The painting harnesses the charged emotions of this place, bringing out layers of its long and storied history.

Creating this piece involved the unique medium of gouache on Black Multimedia Paper. This foundation allowed me to build depth and intensity, helping the vibrant tones of the painting to resonate against the dark backdrop. The elements merge seamlessly, creating a vivid snapshot of an urban landscape, paused in time yet full of life.
