I'm very excited to announce the online launch of Practicing Art by Ruth Williamson wearable Art. Find the link to my designs in the recommendations below.
Eyes That Sing the Light channels energy and calm in one frame, inviting viewers to encounter the powerful presence Cynthia Erivo embodies. It highlights abstraction serving emotional truth, rather than photographic detail. This painting marks a step toward exploring portraiture that honors both individuality and universal creative force.
I'm venturing beyond my comfort zone with larger scale works at 18" by 24" black heavyweight vellum texture multimedia paper. The flooding in the Texas Hill Country and Big Bend has been on my mind inspiring new works reflecting on creation, chaos, destruction, restoration, and renewal. I write about my thoughts in my Practicing Art Substack. Link in recommendations below.
I have ordered a couple of samples of my new #Art venture partnering with Le Galeriste to make my Art wearable. I'm starting with my Interstellar Collection. I hope to partner with a local ready to wear boutique so that you can buy locally as well as online. More about this exciting venture soon. If you are an artist and want to join me online just tell Le Galeriste I sent you.
It has been an exciting weekend at the Denison Arts Council Altered Realities Exhibition at 517 Gallery. The theme is technology and I have two frames pieces that during this exhibition can be purchased through this nonprofit. Interstellar Vitruvian Dance is shown above. I am resuming new work focused on a larger format, 18" x 24", mixed media Strathmore Series 400 black paper. It has a heavyweight vellum texture. I'll be looking for creative framing for these pieces. The first piece, Night's Embrace of Drum and Dance is available now unframed.
If you are like me you are enjoying the long days of summer when the light extends into the night. I'm practicing art in plein air in my own backyard garden as well as creating artistic interpretation of cultural rituals and traditions. I write about my art, poetry, and prose on PracticingArt.Substack.Com Subscriptions are free and my recent posts do not have a paywall. Join me there!
I'm continuing my figurative series on indigenous peoples contemporary expression of cultural rituals and traditions with both paintings for sale and in my Art Sketchbook Journal. By contrast, I've entered several technology themed works to the Denison Arts Council Altered Realities exhibition.
Submitting new Art, gouache 9" x 12", to the Altered Realities Show at Denison Arts Council 517 Gallery. These pieces will be available through the Gallery if accepted, and online after the Show.
Saturday I attended the Art After Dark artist roundtable where members and guests gather salon style to discuss art, society, and where desired critique our work. We also recorded for the Hitting the Streets Podcast answering questions about community development for artists, collectors, and the general public to create connections. I included a link in recommendations to find out more. Hitting the Streets Podcast can be found on most podcast apps.
I enjoy grouping my Art in my home. They serve as inspiration and reminders to make time for creative expression.
I've been working in my Art Sketchbook Journal practicing figurative studies of indigenous peoples' learning and practicing their rituals and traditions in performances, festivals, and communal events. The modern context for ancient rituals occurring with the solstice, equinox, births, marriage, funerals, etc., are inspirational.
I've been working on Handmade 100 pct Cotton Paper measuring about 12" x 14" with Winsor and Newton Watercolors with some exciting results. While retaining the transparency of watercolor, these paints are highly pigmented allowing me to achieve the hues, gradients, and blends I need for my interpretation of the subjects.
This week I've been working on my personal development in my Art Sketchbook Journal that I document on my Practicing Art Substack. My latest series involves figurative work contemplating indigenous peoples rituals and traditions and how they interpret and represent their culture today. The Green Man: Spirit of Leaf and Shadow is an 11.7 by 16.5-inch gouache painting that explores the connection between humanity and nature. Check it out on https://practicingart.substack.com
I plan to begin a series of figurative work and writing about humanities inculcation of creation and destruction in cultural ritual and practice and in the stories they tell about humanity. The first of these, Grace of the Hula ʻAuana, is an exploration of cultural continuity and expression through movement. It reflects my ongoing interest in how dance serves as a living narrative, connecting history, identity, and emotion. I aim to honor the dancers’ grace & shared heritage expressed in Merrie Monarch a celebration of Polynesian vitality and artistry.
This past weekend I participated in a Guided Meditation and Sound Bath. I encourage you to experiment freely and joyfully with different paths. What matters most is that your chosen experience leaves you feeling energized, hopeful, peaceful, and joyful. It’s this renewal that I hope you find, whether in a quiet moment with a carefully played note, the stillness between breaths, or the gentle echo of shared human connection.
Exploring architecture in my Art Sketchbook Journal. Exploring art as creative play fundamentally reshapes how I approach my work. It beckons me into realms where the critical voice quiets, where I can immerse myself in a world of experimentation and risk. To me, art is akin to a sandbox, where each brushstroke is a leap into a new idea, a new perspective. The joy is in the journey, not the destination. This mindset allows a more fearless exploration, where emotions and energy find their way onto the canvas, mirroring the flux of the world around us.
Small works like this 9" x 12 gouache on Black Multimedia Paper are among my favorite pieces. I've highlighted two additional works below. Most of my small gouache works explore landscapes of urban or geological historic landmarks. As I set out to create these artworks, my process begins with selecting subjects that allow for the integration of a fauvist style palette. This involves using intense, analogous or complementary hues that resonate with the original spectrum of color, a choice that brings vibrancy and life to the landscapes.
What a joy it is to create! In addition to painting a few months ago I returned to writing. I hope to produce poetry, prose, and painting, and perhaps some other forms of visual art at some point. Most of these efforts are available on social media. The focus on writing, first just descriptions and inspiration for my paintings, has grown into essays on what art is, as well as reflecting and contemplating the sources and inspiration for my work. If you are interested, the Substack is also named Practicing Art and free and paid subscriptions are open.
Creating this piece was unique. Initially, I thought it was finished. But after weeks of contemplation, I returned to add texture and depth, bringing the vibrant sky into harmony with the landscape. The painting rests on black multimedia paper, adding contrast and intensifying the visual impact. Inspired by an Appalachian sunset, "Brushstrokes of a Colorful Twilight" is an exploration of light and landscape. This artwork embodies a moment of natural beauty, inviting you to pause and breathe in the serenity it offers.
In my role as an artist and writer, I embrace the power to challenge the status quo. Through my visual art and essays, I tell stories that oscillate between creation and destruction, chaos and order. I aim to inspire a sense of calm recognition that we, as humans, dwell in a magnificent and perplexing universe brimming with diversity. Within that calm lies the strength to become better caretakers of our world and to cherish its riches. This perspective extends into my vision of seeing the divine or the universal in everyone.
I'd love for you to be a part of this incredible journey with me. The exhibition is set to open at the Artrageous Art Hub in Sherman, Texas, and the Artist Reception will be held on March 14, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. If you've been following my work, you'll recognize the striking use of color and innovative techniques that have always been my passion, now infused with new themes inspired by the past two years.
I am finding strength in the journeys of my fellow artists and long time friends. Growing up together, we shared countless days in artistic and spiritual connection. Now, as women, our bond transcends physical presence, rooted instead in the heart and spirit. Our art practices serve as markers, documenting the intervals of our shared and individual journeys. As I reflect on these collective experiences, I strive to capture the essence of our journeys in a way that honors the shared past while acknowledging the transformative power of both time and art.

I've been fortunate to participate in several galleries and shows during the month of February and sold five paintings. I love sharing my Art and am so grateful for each new home for my pieces. Focused on development, I am working in my Practicing Art Sketchbook Journal and writing about Art, Life Lessons, Musings, and the sacred cycles of creation and destruction on Substack. I hope you will subscribe and join in the discussion. Pairing poetry, prose, and my Art is one of the developmental practices I plan to add in posts. Enjoy the adventure!
In my art practice, the feeling of connection to my true self is most vibrant when I delve into creating works that capture the natural world's serene and ethereal beauty. There's something transcendental about seeing the world's eternal cycles of creation and destruction materialize on canvas. This endeavor isn't just about representing nature but about distilling its essence, inspiring others to recognize and celebrate its glory. Every stroke that conveys the light and shadows, the dance of colors and shapes, is a meditative act that feeds my soul and intellect, pushing the boundaries of realism to capture the emotional essence of nature. Art has become a remedy for solitude, surprisingly bringing me closer to others, even from the confines of my home.
I've been producing a variety of work in my Practicing Art Sketchbook Journal for my own development, & on Black Paper or Wood Panel with a black gouache ground. I have begun publishing my work that is not for sale and in my Practicing Art Daily Journal on Substack. Similar paintings by commission. Please contact me if you are interested in commissioning any artwork. I have a variety of artwork available for purchase through this website or where noted in the description through local galleries on exhibition. Thank you! I appreciate your consideration.
I'm looking forward to the For the Love of Art one night show by the Gainesville Area Visual Arts to raise funds for their scholarship. GAVA will process all sales transactions and retain a share of the proceeds for the scholarships and other operations costs.
The landscapes in winter draw us toward the return of the light after winter solstice. Each day the darkness covers the night for a few minutes less. We are wrapped in the coldest months but know the sun returns soon to warm us in spring. I hope we all weather winter well and do what we can, where we are to make our world a better place. I ask that you share my Practicing Art website and newsletter with others, and maintain your subscription. For more of my writing, poetry reading, and more to come please subscribe to Practicing Art Substack.
