Kāne Flow is a 9" by 12" gouache painting on black multimedia paper that captures a moment of synchronized movement among five male hula dancers. They stand side by side, each wearing flowing ti leaf skirts and green leafy crowns. Their skin tones vary, creating a natural rhythm across the composition, while leaf collars frame their bare upper bodies. The dancers’ poses connect them, conveying unity and strength.

The background swells with swirling yellows and oranges, energizing the scene and contrasting with the calm blue-grey surface beneath their feet. Bold brushstrokes emphasize the motion and vitality inherent in their dance. The piece is expressive yet focused, reflecting both cultural tradition and the dynamic spirit of the Merrie Monarch Festival.

This artwork draws inspiration from the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, Hawaii, a celebrated event dedicated to preserving and showcasing the art of hula. Kāne Flow honors the distinctive role of men’s hula (hula kāne) within this tradition—highlighting the skill, strength, and storytelling that male dancers bring to the festival’s performances. Ti leaves hold special significance in hula, symbolizing protection and deeply rooted cultural meanings, making their presence essential to this depiction.

Creating this piece was a unique experience, as it centered on male dancers—a subject less commonly explored in my work. The dynamic flow of their ti leaf skirts and the collective energy of their movement inspired a fresh approach to composition and color.

Kāne Flow celebrates heritage, athleticism, and the living culture of Hawaiian dance through a direct, bold visual language. It invites viewers to witness strength in unity and the beauty of tradition in motion.
